In 2010 the library became a partner in a national project “The Development of electronic heritage system” („Virtualaus elektroninio paveldo sistemos plėtra“) and acquired the equipment needed for digitalization of its cultural heritage.

A special department was established to prepare the library’s digitalization strategy and to create open access digital archive of Panevėžys cultural heritage.

Due to its IT, necessary programs, and a team of qualified specialists, the library has become digitalisation competence centre of the region. It has the following functions:

• to coordinate digitalisation processes in the region’s libraries, train specialists and provide methodological assistance;
• to provide cultural heritage digitalisation services to the region’s libraries;
• to create regional digital collection and to integrate its content into the system of Lithuania’s virtual cultural heritage www.epaveldas.lt.
